A heated past

2000 YEARS AGO, CENTRAL AIR MAY HAVE EXISTED!?

The WEEK magazine's daily report had a snippet of information today about an amazing archaeological find: A heated Roman villa..  The WEEK quoted a story that appeared on the British site CULTURE 24 days ago, an article written by Ben Miller.

Miller wrote,
Archaeologists say they have been given a “rare glimpse” into a vast Roman villa with winged corridors and a pavilion-style room with an underfloor heating system on the proposed site of a new bypass in North Yorkshire.

Small sections of tessellated mosaic and a concrete floor, covered by wall plaster lying face down on top of it, have been discovered in Bedale, where an excavation of the villa, launched in November 2014, has unearthed pottery from between the mid-3rd and 4th centuries and a nearby ditched enclosure from the late Iron Age Romano-British period.

Cobble formations were found, illustrating a deep level of sophistication ..

And heat.

THE WEEK says this,
The villa features a room that was heated by what was known as a hypcocaust heating system, Culture 24 reports. The room drew hot air beneath the floor from an external fire, and hollow "box-flue" wall tiles attached to the stone walls allowed the heat to travel out through the top of the building, using air vents. The walls of the heated room featured colorful, painted wall plaster, and the archaeologists believe it was used for dining or other entertaining.

The site is near Catterick, an historic location..

Perhaps it's fair to say that most of the history we have been taught is wrong.. with each new day and new discovery, those textbooks need to be changed. Or maybe just scrapped altogether.

Just imagine: 2000 years ago, a location existed with heat, duct work, and vents.  Central air! Things that even today many houses and buildings don't possess...

Who said we've advanced..........?
